Marrakech travel guide
The Red City — souks, riads, gardens and the theatre of Jemaa el-Fna, with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon.
Updated 22 October 2026 · By the World to Morocco editorial team
Marrakech is Morocco's most visited city and a 2030 World Cup host. Spend at least 3 days: explore the medina and Jemaa el-Fna, visit the Bahia Palace, Jardin Majorelle and the Saadian Tombs, take a hammam, and add a day trip to the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira.
Why visit Marrakech
Founded in 1070 by the Almoravids, Marrakech gave Morocco its name and remains its most theatrical city. Its UNESCO-listed medina is a maze of souks selling lanterns, leather and spices, wrapped in nearly 20 km of rose-coloured ramparts. At sunset, Jemaa el-Fna square fills with food stalls, musicians and storytellers — an experience UNESCO recognises as part of humanity's intangible heritage.
Top things to do in Marrakech
- Jemaa el-Fna & the souks — wander the souks in the morning, return to the square at dusk for grilled food and music.
- Koutoubia Mosque — the 12th-century minaret is the city's landmark (the mosque is open to Muslims only; the gardens to all).
- Bahia Palace & Saadian Tombs — masterpieces of carved cedar, stucco and zellige tilework.
- Jardin Majorelle & YSL Museum — cobalt-blue gardens once owned by Yves Saint Laurent. Book online in summer.
- Ben Youssef Madrasa — a former Koranic school with one of Morocco's most beautiful courtyards.
- A traditional hammam — steam, black soap and a vigorous scrub; perfect after a hot day.

Matchday in Marrakech
The Grand Stade de Marrakech sits on the city's north-western edge, roughly 20–30 minutes from the medina by taxi or shuttle outside of peak traffic. Evening kick-offs are the most comfortable in summer; for afternoon games, bring a hat and water. After the match, head to Gueliz or the Hivernage district, where restaurants and bars stay open late.
Where to stay
Medina riads give you the classic experience — courtyards, rooftop terraces and plunge pools. Gueliz and Hivernage offer modern hotels, easier taxi access and more nightlife, while the Palmeraie has resort hotels with big pools, ideal for families in the heat. Compare areas →
