Quick answer

The easiest way to see the Atlas from Marrakech is a day trip to Imlil or the Ourika Valley. Fit hikers can climb Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) in 2 days. On the road to the Sahara, don't miss the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Aït Benhaddou.

Day trips from Marrakech

  • Imlil — base for Toubkal, with easy walks to Berber villages and lunch with a family.
  • Ourika Valley — riverside restaurants and the Setti Fatma waterfalls.
  • Lalla Takerkoust lake — swimming, kayaking and Atlas views.

Climbing Mount Toubkal

Toubkal is a non-technical summer climb, usually done in two days from Imlil with a night at the refuge. A licensed mountain guide is required. Start early to avoid afternoon heat on the lower trail.
