Rabat travel guide
Morocco's elegant, green and easy-going capital — a UNESCO World Heritage city on the Atlantic.
Updated 22 October 2026 · By the World to Morocco editorial team
Rabat is Morocco's capital and one of the easiest host cities to visit: safe, clean, walkable and well connected by tram and high-speed train. Highlights are the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the relaxed medina and the Chellah ruins.
Why visit Rabat
Rabat has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012 for the way it blends a historic medina and kasbah with a modern 20th-century capital. It is quieter than Marrakech or Fes, with far less hassle in the souks, wide boulevards and a long Atlantic coastline. The new Grand Théâtre by Zaha Hadid Architects and the riverside Bouregreg marina show the city's modern face.
Top things to do in Rabat
- Kasbah of the Udayas — blue-and-white lanes, Andalusian gardens and views over the river mouth.
- Hassan Tower & Mausoleum of Mohammed V — an unfinished 12th-century minaret beside the royal mausoleum.
- Chellah — Roman and medieval ruins inhabited by storks.
- Rabat medina — relaxed shopping on Rue des Consuls.
- Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art — Morocco's leading art museum.
- Salé — cross the river by tram or traditional boat to Rabat's historic twin city.
Matchday at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium
Rabat's rebuilt stadium opened in 2025 and hosted top matches of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. It sits in the southern part of the city, reachable by taxi, tram and bus connections and official matchday shuttles. Rabat Agdal station is the most convenient Al Boraq stop for the southern districts.
Where to stay
Hassan and the city centre are walkable to the medina and stations; Agdal is a modern district with cafés and hotels, convenient for the stadium; Souissi has upscale hotels and greenery. Riads in the medina and Kasbah offer character at good prices.
