Quick answer

The most popular Sahara experience in Morocco is Erg Chebbi near Merzouga. Allow 3 days from Marrakech or Fes (2 nights), stopping at the Todra Gorge and Aït Benhaddou. In June and July, days are very hot: travel early, rest at midday and ride camels at sunrise and sunset.

Why go to the desert

Orange dunes rising 150 metres above the stony plain, total silence and a sky full of stars: a night in the Sahara is the highlight of many trips to Morocco. Camps range from simple Berber tents to luxury camps with private bathrooms.

Classic 3-day route from Marrakech

  1. Day 1: cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, visit Aït Benhaddou, overnight in the Dades Valley.
  2. Day 2: walk the Todra Gorge, drive to Merzouga, camel trek into the dunes for sunset, night in camp.
  3. Day 3: sunrise over the dunes, then return to Marrakech or continue to Fes.

Summer tips

  • Choose a camp with air-cooled tents or plan to sleep outside under the stars
  • Cover your head and neck — a cheche (desert scarf) is ideal
  • Drink more water than you think you need
  • Consider the Agafay or Zagora deserts if you are short on time

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit the Sahara in one day?

Not the real dunes of Merzouga — they're too far. For a short taste, visit the Agafay Desert near Marrakech instead.

Is the Sahara too hot in summer?

Daytime temperatures can exceed 40°C, but sunrise, sunset and nights are pleasant. Plan activities around those hours.
